HAZET 4810C Optical Refractometer

What Is an Optical Refractometer?

A refractometer measures the refractive index of a liquid to determine the concentration of dissolved substances using the appropriate scale. It provides a quick and practical method for checking fluid concentration, supporting quality control and maintenance. Depending on the instrument and its scales, applications include testing coolant antifreeze concentration, AdBlue® urea concentration, battery acid density and sugar content in food and beverages.

Refractometer Applications

  • Automotive: Testing coolant antifreeze concentration, battery acid density and AdBlue® urea concentration.
  • Food and beverage industry: Checking sugar content (°Brix) in fruit juice, honey, wine and jam.
  • Clinical and laboratory applications: Testing serum protein concentration, urine specific gravity and chemical solution concentration using suitable instruments.
  • Aquarium and marine applications: Measuring salinity.

Benefits of an Optical Refractometer

  • Quick and practical: Provides a reading within seconds using only a few drops of sample.
  • Precise readings: Determines fluid concentration using the appropriate measurement scale.
  • Versatile testing: Different fluids can be checked with a single instrument equipped with the relevant scales.
  • Quality control: Supports fluid checks against specified requirements during production and maintenance.

Antifreeze Freeze Point and AdBlue® Testing

The HAZET 4810C optical refractometer is used in automotive servicing to check antifreeze concentration and frost protection in engine coolant and screenwash, as well as the urea concentration of AdBlue®. It is also suitable for G11, G12++, G12 EVO, G13, G40, G48 and G64 coolants. Checking antifreeze concentration helps verify that the coolant provides the required protection against freezing.

Battery Acid Density Measurement

Scale A indicates battery acid density in kg/L to help assess the battery's state of charge. The following zones are shown on Scale A:

  • RECHARGE = Recharging required
  • FAIR = Acceptable state of charge
  • GOOD = Good state of charge

AdBlue® Urea Concentration Check

Scale B indicates the urea concentration of AdBlue®. The nominal concentration is 32.5% by mass. Readings between 31.8% and 33.2% fall within the urea concentration tolerance specified in ISO 22241-1.

Coolant Antifreeze Testing – Scale C

  • C1: Glycol (G11/G48, G12, G12+/G30, G12++/G40/G12evo/G65)
  • C2: Glycol (G13)

Screenwash Frost Protection

Scale D provides an approximate indication of the frost protection level of screenwash. The reading is a reference value and may vary depending on the fluid composition.

How to Use the HAZET 4810C Optical Refractometer

1 – Taking a Sample

Take a small sample of the fluid to be tested using the HAZET 4810B sampling pipette. Apply a few drops of the sample to the instrument's prism surface.

2 – Closing the Prism Cover

Gently close the transparent prism cover so that the sample spreads evenly across the prism surface. Make sure there are no air bubbles.

3 – Illuminating and Reading the Scale

With the sample evenly spread and the prism cover closed, point the instrument towards daylight or switch on the integrated LED illumination. Look through the eyepiece and adjust the focus until the scale is clearly visible. Read the value on the appropriate scale at the boundary between the light and dark areas.

4 – Cleaning

After testing, clean the prism surface and prism cover with a clean, soft cloth.

Refractometer Calibration

Refractometer calibration is carried out at the Surkon calibration laboratory. Instruments are inspected and adjusted as necessary before calibration. A Surkon SURCAL calibration certificate is issued.

Surkon is HAZET's authorised representative in Türkiye for sales and technical service.

Repair services for HAZET products are available through the Surkon service centre. Surkon also provides calibration services for HAZET torque wrenches and other applicable equipment.
