HAZET 4810C Optical Refractometer
What Is an Optical Refractometer?
A refractometer provides rapid and accurate measurements of dissolved substance concentration in liquids, playing a key role in quality control, safety and process efficiency. From antifreeze and wine production to honey and battery electrolyte testing, refractometers are used to determine the correct concentration across a wide range of applications.

Antifreeze Freezing Point and AdBlue Testing
The HAZET 4810 C optical refractometer is used in automotive applications to check antifreeze concentration in engine coolant and windscreen washer fluid, as well as AdBlue quality. It is also suitable for G11, G12++, G12 EVO, G13, G40, G48 and G64 coolants. Correct determination of antifreeze concentration helps protect the engine against freezing.
Battery Electrolyte Density Measurement
Scale A indicates battery electrolyte density in kg/L. The following condition zones are shown on Scale A:
- RECHARGE = Recharging required
- FAIR = Acceptable
- GOOD = Good
AdBlue® Assessment
Scale B indicates the urea concentration in AdBlue®, which should nominally be 32.5%. Readings between 31.8% and 33.2% are within the specified concentration tolerance according to ISO 22241-1.

- C1: Glycol (G11/G48, G12, G12+/G30, G12++/G40/G12evo/G65)
- C2: Glycol (G13)
Windscreen Washer Fluid Antifreeze
Scale D (reference value) indicates the level of freeze protection provided by the windscreen washer fluid.
How to Use the HAZET 4810C Optical Refractometer ?
1 – Sample Collection
Collect a small quantity of the fluid to be tested. Use the specially designed HAZET 4810b pipette to obtain a suitable sample volume. Apply a drop of the antifreeze solution or AdBlue to the instrument’s prism.
2 – Closing the Prism Cover
Ensure that the antifreeze or AdBlue sample spreads evenly across the prism surface. Check that no air bubbles remain, then gently close the transparent cover.
3 – Positioning Towards a Light Source
Once the sample has been applied to the prism without air bubbles and the prism cover has been closed, point the instrument towards daylight or switch on its built-in LED light source. The illumination makes the measurement scale visible. Adjust the focus using the eyepiece until the scale appears sharp and clear.
Complete the procedure by wiping the prism and its cover with a clean cloth.
Refractometer Calibration
Refractometer calibration is performed at the Surkon calibration laboratory. Instruments are calibrated after all inspections and fine adjustments have been completed. A Surkon SURCAL calibration certificate is issued.
